"You know, I've been wondering." Nats was lying in her bed, in her signature pajamas. Amanda sat on the bed, also in pajamas and to the side of her friend. "Maybe we've been taking this prank a little too far."
Amanda turned her head straight ahead, swinging her legs against the bedside. "Same. Maybe we're overdoing it. But you gotta admit, we've went that far into giving that asshole a lesson he soon won't forget, right?"
Nats looked straight ahead for a few moments, as if thinking. "You're right. It was my idea, after all." She crossed her arms. "But like, I've hurt so many people in the process already. Like Karen, or Miriam. What did they do to me?"
"Come on, Nats," Amanda smiled, "you can always invite them to another place. Maybe even start your own company."
Nats couldn't help but chuckle at the idea. "I'm not going to start a company. I don't trust myself not to become a Stuart. You know, Everyone condemns hypocrites until it benefits them personally. I can't trust humans, but I'm one, so I can't tr-"
"Nats." Amanda interrupted her, but this time, her eyes gazing directly into Natsuko's in a way that they haven't before. "You're right, humans are scum. But I trust you, Natsuko."
Breaking the gaze of her friend, Nats looked away and to the wall. "So what? The time will come when I hurt you. If I can't even trust myself not to do that, how could you trust me?"
A warm hand touched Nats's cheek, turning it back to look into Amanda's eyes. "Because I know I can trust you. If you don't know that, then I know."
"But, Amanda," Nats tried to break her friend's gaze, which didn't seem probing or anything, but more so... warm. It contrasted her inner wildfire. Whereas her heart was ravaged by flames that consumed everything it touched, Amanda's were like sunrays, inviting her to bask in its golden warmth, full of energy. "I've had my own parents turn me into the piece of work that I am. If I can't trust the people who brought me into this world, then how could I trust anyone? How could I trust myself?"
Amanda saw the tears stuck at the edges of Nats's eyes. "Natsuko, I can trust you, and you can trust me." Amanda lifted her legs up, now standing on her knees right next to her distrusting friend. "This idea isn't our best, but look, I think..." She paused for a moment. "You're a really great friend, Nats. You're caring, I... don't know, you're genuine. Honest with yourself and with me."
"But..." Natsuko uttered, but she couldn't continue what she had on her mind, as her lips slowly closed.
"I know I can trust you, Natsuko." Amanda tilted her head with a smile. "I'm sure you know, but... I... I..."
Nats instinctively figured out what Amanda was getting at. Of course it was that... of course... of course...! She never said it out loud before, but Natsuko knew it. She's the only one who put up with her rough personality and got closer to her, despite all the frictions they had before. Natsuko knew that Amanda felt a sublime kind of happiness only in two occasions: when around the kids she babysit, and...of course, when around Natsuko.
"I-I'm not sure how to put it, but you're the bestest American friend I've ever met."
Natsuko couldn't describe the feelings running through her head. She long craved to be an American. But she never got that validation despite everything she'd done. She'd get into arguments with Americans about the country's interesting politics and history, and she usually came out making her opponents look like they knew nothing about the real United States. But no matter what she did, she was still haunted by her Japanese shadow. She was still perceived as the silly Japanese girl who hated Japan.
The smile, and the tears on Amanda's face only proclaimed something new, though. She wasn't flattering her, or calming her down. She meant it. Natsuko Hanzou was the "bestest" American she'd ever met. And what's more...
"I want you to say what you were trying to say, Amanda. Come on." Nats looked directly into her best friend's eyes. "Come on, you can do it." Back at home, the thing that Amanda was leading up to this whole time was looked down upon socially. Which was funny, because it was perfectly fine in anime and manga, just not in real life. And if Amanda didn't seize the moment... Nats feared that she could revert to her Japanese ways and reject it if she was too late. "Before...I change my mind."
"Natsuko, I... I..." Amanda kept faltering, losing focus of her friend.
"Say it, Amanda! Just say it!" Nats gently held Amanda's head with her hands.
"I love you, Natsuko! I love you!"
And that was all it took for Nats to instantly bring her head to Amanda's, lips immediately touching.
"Mwah." Natsuko pulled her head back as quickly as she brought it closer, her cheeks now flushed red... "Umm... I think I fucked up. That's...not how you kiss, right?"
Amanda, her cheeks also painted red, remained shocked for less than a second, before she just giggled. "You'd think we'd know how to kiss better with all the movies we watched."
Natsuko's cheeks were even redder. "I think... maybe the internet... has an idea..." She paused between the words, very uncharacteristically.
"Oh come on, Nats. We gonna Google even that?" Amanda just decided to embrace her friend with a hug, her body on top of her friend's.
Nats wrapped her hand around the back of Amanda's. "I... didn't really believe you when you told me you were bi."
"I didn't think you loved anyone either, Nats. But I just like you."
"I was too stupid to know it, but I... I can't explain it well either... I think I... no, I actually love you too, Amanda. There's no other way I can explain it."
The lovebirds just giggled. "Too bad we're girls, though." Amanda just kept on giggling.
"Who cares." Nats hugged Amanda tighter. "If I can't trust myself, then I know I can trust you. I don't care about anything else."
For the first time ever, the two girls went to a peaceful sleep in the same bed, cuddling each other. Even if their plan with Stuart were to break down, it was clear as sunlight their newfound love would persist through Hell and back, as they start a new chapter in their lives.

This idea sprang up in my head this morning and I knew I had to write it, even if I had to spend an extra hour of my evening. I thought it was only natural that their friendship develops into love, too. I hope you liked reading it as much as I liked writing it.
