This is the admin thread for Mafia 81. I'll compile everything about the game here. The manager wants work on premises So the townies have been bribed by the manager Thing is, they don't know who's on it, so they're kinda... Just flailing around trying to sell the point. They also work from home Those who weren't bribed conveniently enough are on a team, the mafia one Minus one of them, who isn't on said team and is on their own This is because the setup I was thinking about demands nine players but I need to add an extra one so the extra one will become a neutral role So seven people who were bribed, two who weren't and have close bonds, and one weirdo, that's the setup And so far I think everything makes sense as far making sense in a mafia game goes So far, the political leanings only serve as a guideline for how I should take the character. Since I'm writing fairly normal (relatively) real-life people, this is pretty much a brand new way for me to actually turn their profile into a character with all that comes with the territory. Characters: 1. Amanda Tyler Your average black American She's maybe 27 She's into books maybe, a babysitter (of the not evil kind) on the side Doesn't understand a thing about politics or whatever, she's just in with the flow 2. Joey Anderson Rushmore He's your average white American About 26 years old Loves baseball, is a bit of a feminist, or rather he looks down on the idea of the tradwife and breadwinner couple Maybe a slight lefty EDIT: This character was kinda vague, but after writing his PM for him, I got the feel for his character and the wife I gave him, Marisa. They're basically Cosmo and Wanda from season 0 of Fairly OddParents, you know, a couple who really really really love each other. 3. Natsuko Hanzou She's an immigrant from Japan (obviously), 33 years old. Hates anime for some reason. She's more at home in America than Japan.
Hasn't gained the American nationality, so she can't vote, and she keeps swinging left and right like a pendulum. 4. Miriam Sabry She's an immigrant from Egypt. 22 years old. Despite being outwardly Coptic, she's kind of... not like that. I'll keep her vague. She recently showed up in America, so she doesn't understand the political system at all. 5. Nikolay Artur A Russian of 20 years old. Rumors abound that he's connected to the Russian Mafia, but then again, he keeps disowning his country and family. He has a strange fondness for the Republican Party. 6. Franco Tenorio He's a Hispanic American of 27 years old. Quiet and introverted, he doesn't strike up much of a conversation. Has cats and dogs at home. Probably a centric.
7. Johan Barnabas American dude, 25 years old. Everybody calls him Joe. Has a habit of putting his all into work when it's totally unnecessary. Doesn't like Joe Biden. 8. Manny Anderson Another American dude, 26 years old. Military know it all, loves fighter planes, talks too much about them. Doesn't buy into the "2nd amendment protects us from government" stuff. Leans right but doesn't care about gun legislation. 9. JoshuaSam Michaels Black American dude, 27 years old. A Florida man in the flesh. The stuff he does is kinda... out there sometimes. Likes Donald Trump. EDIT: I like the new direction of "Florida man by choice". Since apparently, thinking brings unhappiness according to him. 10. Karen Conway An American lady of 28 years old. She's not the kind who wants the manager, but her name's association with that type of people makes most managers show up on their own - only to end up making a new friend. Prefers not to talk about politics. MANAGER Stuart Stutter The oldest guy in the company, at 48 years old. Quite a big gap between him and Natsuko, the second oldest employee. A stuck-up dude who believes in an ironclad rule of his employees, by just keeping them around. That and he barely budges from old tech, still sports a classic non-Android BlackBerry with half of its services down. He's however a bit shrewd, so he tried bribing some of the employees to sing the praises of work from office and diss work from home. He also thought there wouldn't be any dissidents or secret coalitions, which is... well it's a forum mafia game after all. MANAGER ASSISTANT Price Terrance She's a lady with a strong personality, and she could possibly dwarf Stuart if she so wanted. She prefers working in the background and away from the attention, though. 30 years old, and already a mother.
JANITOR Terressa Keller She's always at the office, so she doesn't have much of a choice in that battle, buuut... she's kinda able to figure out what's going on from afar, but refuses to get involved in anything other than doing her own job.
24 years old,

Another good old workday in some random company in America. The same as all other workdays in all the other companies... at least post-COVID-19. So as one can imagine, everyone was sipping coffee from their home in just another Zoom meeting arranged by the local out-of-touch manager, Stuart Stutter. "It's been three years since this whole COVID shit started and I don't wanna hear anymore about it. You guys gotta get back to dem office and start working like real men!" You could even see the spit coming out of his mouth, despite his old laptop camera. There was a brief silence, maybe even shock on some of the other faces on stream. ...until one of them started speaking. "Ya'know, I really want to get my legs moving." Started Amanda. This struck some as a weird thing to note. She frequently talked about the kids she babysat and how often she'd play and run around with them. She didn't need to go to work to quote unquote get her legs moving. "So yeah, I'm in for the office." Another moment of silence fell on the meeting. "Well, Amanda's here making some sense. I just want to talk with you guys more." Manny followed up. Stranger yet. Manny liked to work from home because that's where his multi-thousand dollar airplane simulator is located. And if he really wanted to talk about airplanes, he had the chance to just stream his screen online. "That was long overdue." Pouted Natsuko. "I won't get to see your shitty anime figurines anymore." Her face turned into a faint grin. Well, this was kinda perfectly in character for Natsuko, but you didn't know she hated her country that much. Then again, she forgot what her name looked like in Japanese - she only remembered that it was in kanji, but WHICH? A loud, thick Russian accent permeated the chat right after Natsuko. "If that's what Mr. Stuart wants, then who are we to complain?" Thus spoke Nikolay. "Let us see each other again." The lack of resistance to the idea may feel very Russian... but normally he would go on and on about not wanting any part of his country or his family, and he was usually a lot resistant to some things. Not here, strangely enough. A young, Hispanic face briefly squinted his eyes at the meeting before him, only to start speaking a moment later. "Ah, right, OK." That was all Franco said, having regained his composure, likely from the shock. "Okay ladies and gentlemen," Joey smiled, "let's meet in person again. It's been a while, and I missed having the after work beer party." He just smiled. Well, to be fair, he prefers a kind of traditional American lifestyle, and that means the daily hustle of going to work. Still, it just FELT OFF. So many people are suddenly singing praises for going to the office. ON A ZOOM MEETING. The red flags are all over the place. Hell, the kids Amanda is babysitting were all over the stream. And Natsuko didn't change out of her pajamas either. And one of Franco's cats and two of his dogs were in the back of his stream. Most of them were directly benefiting from WFH, and yet...! "Well some of ya might think, 'but Joe, you think it's better to be in the most productive environment so you can give it your all'. And I agree." His head turned around the room for some reason. "But maybe we've been kinda slacking off at home. Maybe it's time to call this quits." Karen cleared up her throat. "Well, what can I say? It'd be nice to see you again, men. Comrades, friends, second family." She smiled wide, as was her way. It was hard to gauge if this particular smile was genuine like she always was, or empty, but suffice to say that even when founded on nothing concrete, that doubt is still there. "Well, I guess if that's where the water flows..." Miriam spoke, the cross on her neck shining against the screen as always. For some reason she didn't say another word, though her expression remained the change. "Yeah yeah yeah. I don't care either way." Joshua was the only one to be loud but outspoken about his position of... swaying with the wind. It was a lot of loud words to say a lot of nothing, but fortunately that felt in tune with his character. "See," Stuart took the initiative again, "I knew it would come down to this. None of you are happy with staying at home anymore, and we're now right at the start of a brand new er-- what? Who's that with us?" Something happened on the Zoom meeting screen. Normally 11 people were supposed to be present, but Stuart was the first to notice... that there was a 12th. "Must be one of you connecting with one of dem phones?" He relaxed immediately, knowing there were times when Nikolay or Joshua joined with multiple devices, but then he tensed up again when he read the name of that 'intruder'. "Sailor Moon?" He seemed perplexed as to who would call themselves a "sailor moon" or some silly name like that. Of course, that name rang a bell to the rest of the group, especially Natsuko who rolled her eyes in disgust. It felt like someone was making fun of her, and only her, specifically. But she was surprised to see what this supposed magical girl had to say on the chat... "Stuart has coerced eight people in this meeting into agreeing with him. He even promised them a prize." Natsuko read that out loud. "What the fuck?" Stuart lost his composure. "What the- what, why, who would do that? Me?" "Uhm, it says your name right here. Stuart." Miriam pointed with her finger at the screen, oblivious to the fact no one would see her pointing at his name specifically. "Oh look at that, here's another lunatic calling himself..." Natsuko sighed heavily, "Madoka Kaname. I swear I'm in a magical girl asylum." "What the hell's going on here!?" Stuart looked irritated by what was going on. "Huh." Nikolay started reading the new message by the extra newcomer. "Think yourself so smart, Stuart? We'll expose you all. Smiley." "You fucks think this is funny!?" Stuart became a little bit angrier than usual. "Come on, show yourselves!"
And this is when things got interesting... because...
"I don't know what these names mean." Nikolay shrugged. "I've no idea what's going on here" Joshua scratched his head. Miriam sighed. "That doesn't concern me. I'm here to work." Joey just made a smile. "Come on guys, must be a silly joke. No need to stress yourselves out like that." Karen joined in. "You're making a mountain out of a molehill. We all gotta have fun sometimes." Franco was too absorbed in petting one of his cats. Natsuko was silent, but her irritated face betrayed her, conveying a thousand words instead. Manny tilted his head in confusion. "I honestly don't understand what is it about you Stuart. You got your pros and cons, but this ain't one of them." "Yeah, I agree." Amanda just smiled. "Why you all acting so dismissive?" Johan squinted his eyes. "It's got to be one of you."
"IT'S GOT TO BE TWO OF YOU!" Stuart slammed the table, in a fury never seen before. "I'll catch you before you know it, and teach you your place!"
And so... it started. A virtual hunt for two memesters who are probably saying the truth because let's be honest, it's pretty weird that so many people want to go back to the office at the same time, without any sort of resistance...

Welcome to Mafia #81 - Conspiracy From Home!PARTICIPANTS:01. Amanda Tyler ....... Atlo 02. Joey Rushmore ....... GamezRanker 03. Natsuko Hanzou ....... joppo 04. Johan Barnabas ....... Catventurer 05. Nikolay Artur ....... supplementscene 06. Franco Tenorio ....... Microfish 07. Miriam Sabry ....... maxleod 08. Manny Anderson ....... yogsloth 09. Sam Michaels ....... Lifthrasil 10. Karen Conway ....... trentonlf This is the rules post. TL;DR: You can't bet, you can't cryptoclaim, real-life > mafia, don't post unless your name is listed above, don't post if you're dead (except one bah post) or observing, read the freaking PMs before posting in the game, DO NOT EDIT YOUR POSTS, only the rules in this game applies, don't be a Stuart and get modkilled. Read the rules section at least once. GOG Mafia General Rules (veterans know these):Game Rules:1. PookaMustard is the moderator of the game. I like to give chances but please don't abuse it. If you personally harass or insult other players, or go against the spirit of the game, I WILL TAKE ACTION, and either warn you, punish you, or even modkill you. After all, we all want a fun game. 2. Mafia is a game of lying and deception. That means you can't take any player at their word during the game, with few exceptions (real life issues mostly). 3. During the work week (Day), you can vote a player by writing your vote on a new line, in all bold. For example, Vote zeogold. Same goes for unvoting, except you don’t need to write the name of the player, for example, Unvote. You also don’t need to unvote when changing your vote. If no majority is submitted before the end of the Day, no lynch happens. In case you deliberately want a no-lynch to happen anyway, you can always Vote no-lynch. 4. A player is immediately lynched once they receive the majority of votes. You cannot unvote to cancel the lynch. A lynch immediately starts the Twilight, which ends when the moderator announces the flip of the lynched player. The lynched player can still talk until the Phase ends. If no majority vote is achieved, the Twilight is automatically started at the end of the Day. 5. During the weekend (Night), any player actions available to you can be submitted to the moderator via PM, and nobody can talk in this thread. If an action is not submitted by the player, the moderator assumes that the action is "do nothing." (Pro-tip: don’t waste your actions, they’re valuable for your team). When the Day starts again, the ability to talk in the thread is also restored. 6. Players receive their alignment, role, win condition and character backstory in a PM. Please add me as a friend or enable PMs from non-friends so the game can start. Also please READ your PMs before you write any posts. 7. To win, players must fulfill the conditions specified in their PM. Players who don’t fulfill them lose the game. Unless otherwise specified, these conditions apply even if you’re dead. If you get modkilled, you automatically lose the game regardless of your win condition. 8. The game is only played in this thread and in the relevant secret chats. Discussing this game outside of the official threads is prohibited. As well, the only rules and modifications in effect for this game will be available IN THIS POST. Do not quote anything said about the setup or potential rules from the signup thread or other places, quote ONLY from this post. 9. DO NOT EDIT YOUR POSTS. Yes, I feel your urge to fix those godawful grammar and spelling errors, but what's worse is when your edits break the game by correcting impressions you wouldn't like other factions to have, or retracting lies you have made. If you feel the need to edit the post, PM me and I will allow or reject at my own discretion. Likewise, do not double post within 11 minutes of your last post: either wait at least 13 minutes before posting, or ask for a bump in the Forum Mafia admin thread. 10. You are expected to make at least one post every 48 hours. If you need to be away for longer, let me know (or post in the thread) and you’ll be excused as per GOG Mafia General Rules. However, posting more should make for a more interesting and fun game. 11. If you die, stop posting in this thread. You have one single "bah" post to express your frustration, but don’t hand out any game-relevant info on your way out. 12. If you have any questions, mention my name on a new line, and write your question. Both in bold. For example, PookaMustard can we have a sample PM?13. Read the rules 14. Have fun, and stay classy Game-specific rules:This game uses an open setup based off NewD3 from the mafiascum wiki. That means everyone know what alignments and roles are in the game, and they are as follows: A Neutral Vanilla A Mafia Goon A Mafia Rolecop A Town Jailkeeper A Town Friendly Neighbor + 5 Town Vanillas Generally, in keeping with the theme of the game, the weekdays (day phase) start with Monday and end with Friday, and the weekends (night phase) are Saturdays and Sundays in the Real World. Due to the timing of the game in the real world, a Christmas and New Year's vacation is not off the books. This will pause the game for up to a week for all parties. If you want me to grant you that, then you can Vote Christmas on a new line. Now, for the sample PMs...all of them start with your character backstory, can be two or three paragraphs up to half a chapter from short novel. And then it details your role, as follows:

Atlo/Amanada PM Your Telegram client is mostly empty. Just family, and your best friends, and it gets a lone notification or two like every day. Just stupid TikTok videos and Facebook links sometimes. A hail of notifications came in all of a sudden, though. And what do you know, it was from your unlikeliest best friend ever, Natsuko. "amanda" "you gotta check this shit out" "that fuckhead stuart" "just dm'd me on teams" "telling me that we're going back to" "work from office" "or else" Of course, she'd put down a hail of messages like that when put in a situation that mildly excited her. But it kind of shocked you. Stuart did the same to you just a few minutes ago. You just had no idea that he was going all over the place to enforce his will. "Say what?" You type back. "He just told me the same stuff." "fuck him" "fuck his mother too while im at it" "Nats pls" You didn't like how quickly she dissed the whole lineage of anyone who mildly irritated her, even if accidentally. But you got used to it eventually. "amanda, no one threatens me like that. just say you'll fire me, don't go or else on me" "That's... Isn't that also a threat?" That part did puzzle you. "at least I know what's in it for me, look, im so tired of him, but bleh. let's see how the ship sails, but can we agree on something?" It takes you a second to decide if you're going with whatever she thought of next. But then you thought... "Nats, you know I'm always game." "oh, ok. you know how easy it is to just get into his device, right?" "Heh, yeah, what's with that super easy AnyDesk password" He's like the only one who uses AnyDesk in the company, when the rest use Citrix. You figured the reason for that split is that Stuart just didn't have the patience to learn another piece of software. Wait, what...? She's... no way. "fucking anydesk, hell yeah." She inserted a sticker of Princess Bubblegum laughing off. "he basically threatened the whole team so why don't we threaten him ourselves" "You're fucking crazy." Of course. Of course she's went there. But even that didn't phase you, at least not much. You were already on board. Why would you keep working under that Stuart guy, when being a babysitter was more profitable, more fun, and least of all, not soulless? "yeah i'm loco, boohoo. you're in, right? you said your babysitting job makes more money than this" Besides the suspicion you had that Nats at the very least attempted to learn Spanish, it's like she read your mind and thoughts and spoke them out loud. "Definitely. I guess you're sorted out too?" "ill just find another job, lots of cool jobs in america, fuck yeah" And that's... how you came up with the plan to make a big show out of this. —— Hi, Atlo. You are AMANDA TYLER , a MAFIA GOON. Your partner is NATSUKO HANZOU (joppo), who is a MAFIA ROLECOP. You can vote during the work week (day phase), just like the Townies. You or your partner can "kill" a coworker (player) during each weekend (night phase), removing them from the game. You win when the Town has been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from occurring. You can communicate with your partner at any time here: whyquicktopicwhy.proboards.com/thread/32/magical-girl-wifom-mafia-thread

Franco / Microfish PM
----
"Hey Franco." You saw Stuart's name pop up on Teams. He's kinda of... a fishy person. He never asks about you or your pets, and doesn't do much for a regular conversation. It's always about work. And you weren't surprised when the notifications kept coming. "This work from home crap ain't working out. You have to get back to the office."
You clicked his convo and was hoping to see what else he'd say. Not working out? Most of you would've left the place long ago, the transportation simply wasn't worth it. But now that you've been committed this far into work from home, it's gotten even worse. You've finally maintained a good work-life balance, just by being around where your pets are and doing your work from there. But it gets worse...
"Everyone else is telling me good things about going back to the office. I don't see why it wouldn't work out for you."
Deep down, you wanted to resist, but ultimately, that never worked out before in your life. At least not at this early stage. It's better to instead wait and see how the situation will unfold, and then act accordingly. Maybe someone would get hurt in the process, but that's work for you. Everyone else should be looking for their best interests, same as you, but the problem is only you know what your best interests are, and you know full well the "team" will be split into two sides...
Of course, your fears were proven true. And you just want to have a job, darn it.

Karen / trent PM
----
You were out shopping during your break time, but just as usual, it happened again. Someone on the cashier saw your name was registered on the system as "Karen", and right here and there, on their own, they summoned the manager for you. How many times you went back and forth with different cashiers and managers that you're not that kind of Karen, that you prefer taking life easy? Hell, you made bonds with a lot of managers and would-otherwise-be-unlucky cashiers, but that shtick kept happening over and over again. You were tired of that, really. You just wanted to make friends normally, you know?
And that's when YOUR manager popped up on your phone as you were talking to the manager lady, who was recently talking about how things have been down recently and wished for a little bit of an upturn. Well, if anything, Stuart was more deserving of the Karen stereotype than you are. He's the kind to ask for your manager even if he is, in fact, your manager. So what was he up to?
"Karen, I bet you'll agree with me that work from the premises is better than this work from home shit, right?" You didn't like how casually he talked with you or your coworkers about work, especially if it was something that upset his random.org-powered mood.
You replied to him with an equally flippant "Yeah, whatever."
"By the way, there's no resisting that. If you do, you won't like what will happen next."
The way he treated you was worthy of a heavy sigh, which made the store manager, Linda, concerned. "What's going on?"
"Ah, no. It's just... my manager." You looked to the side. "He's such an insensitive moron."
"I'm sorry about him." Linda reassured her. "I worked with a few of those before. They're awful."
"It's fine. I'll just keep looking for jobs on the side and then bail out, but until then, I have to play his game." You smiled, as if none of what you said worried you before.
"Well, seriously Ms. Karen, I'm worried about you."
"Don't be!" You tilted your head to the side. "You just look out after yourself and your employees. You're a great lady before you're a fine manager, you'll do great."
Now Linda looked flustered. "Aw, thanks."
Of course, later in the day, you know that there are a couple... renegades in your group. To maximize your odds of staying just a few more days while employed, you immediately figure out that these folks won't be staying long. You had nothing against them and even wished them the best (despite not knowing who they are), but, you know... it's not a life and death issue, and you're sure they would be understanding of whatever happens.

There was nothing for you to do this morning, so what better thing to do than spend some time simulating a regular civilian aircraft with your prized airplane simulator setup? It was so decked. Dashboards, screens, realistic seat, heck, even a control stick from a decommissioned Boeing. The entire cockpit for an aspiring pilot who didn't make it to be a real one.
And your job gave you the opportunity to spend most of that time at home, doing a task or two every now and then in exchange for flying planes all day long. It was perfect.
UNTIL STUART DECIDED TO DROP YOU A NOTIFICATION.
"Hey Manny." He just kept his words brief with you, simply to gauge how fast you'd respond.
Thankfully, the phone was close enough to you on the cockpit to read that message, so you unlocked it, wrote back "What's up boss Stuart" and then hit the send button in a flash.
It took him about ten seconds to switch from typing to having an actual message. "I don't think this work from home stuff works anymore, so you'll agree with me that it does work, right? I have a feeling most people don't. I don't know what to do with them."
"I" you wanted to write more, but you hit the Enter button early.
"You're with me, okay?" You couldn't figure out if this was a rhetorical question or not. And quite frankly, you were more thinking about waiting it out, and seeing what would happen.
And in fact, things did happen. That is, nearly everyone agreed to go along with Stuart, but there's two... nuisances, so to say. You wondered if you had no choice but to participate in these theatrics, but, eh. You were already thinking of quitting by that point, but you're staying to see how it'll eventually end.

Yet another day of wishing, hoping and dreaming. You had the naive wish of Swan Lake being broadcast all over Russia. For some reason, this timeless ballet performance is associated with systemic, sweeping changes in Russian politics, you were led to believe, and legend has it that if it were to be broadcast en masse, then current Russian society, politics and demographics would have already been restarted. You didn't know if it was going to be for better or for worse, but it was some semblance of hope.
But thinking about that hope meant something else. If your mind was going back to your home country, it meant you were bored out of your mind. And why? You disowned it. You disowned your family, friends, comrades, coworkers, colleagues, fellow students, literally everyone that still holds on to that country. You're here in America, land of the free (as legend has it anyway), yet you haven't really changed your Russian mindse-
Of course, finally something does happen. A notification slid from the side of your Windows 10 desktop, warning you that Stuart is on the hunt. He's, well, the kind of person that Mother Russia would call her favorite child, so you naturally don't like him, but eh. He's relatively tame. That is, until you read what the notification says...
"Work from office is now mandatory. In the next meeting, no one will say a single thing..."
You clicked the notification to see what kind of thing he's threatening with. The first thing that was apparent was that, yes, it was meant specifically for you, Nikolay Artur. "In the next meeting, no one will say a single thing about work from home or any such bullshit. It's over. And you had better agree with me."
Instinctively, but before you let your mind take over and think about how fucked up any of this was, you just responded with a meek "Ok". Why, yes, you submitted to your new authority already. The exact same thing that made you disown your countrymen! And later on, you found yourself embroiled in a mess where two revolutionaries were trying to change the system, and you're meant to stop them from doing so.
You could just never convince yourself that America is only free because of its people's will. Bleh. Gotta go with the flow for now, you guess.

Joey / Gamezranker PM
It's another beautiful day in America. You know, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, the dogs are barking, the works. That and your wife, Marisa Hawthorne, made you some of her most delicious black tea, which she brought over to your desk.
"How's work today, honey?" She smiled.
"Well, it's kinda boring." You looked at her. "I think we could spend some time together now. Got nothing to do, maybe you have something on your mind?"
She sat on the sofa, which was right next to your desk. "I dunno, but you're telling me this Stuart character is getting weird recently."
You opened up the Teams window, so you could casually scroll through every conversation that had Stuart involved. "Yeah, he seems kinda obsessed with productivity, and, uhhh..." you made a quoting gesture with your hands, "'wasted minutes' or something. I've got the feeling he thinks we're not worth his money."
"Yeah, they all go through that kind of phase." Marisa giggled. She's worked under so many managers, and the fickle, work-obsessed kind (which Stuart is) was no stranger to her. "But you've got a good resume. Besides, we agreed that you shouldn't work at a company for too long, right?"
You stroked your chin for a second. You haven't been with Stuart for so long, about three months really. It was a month ago when you and Marisa realized and consequently agreed that companies don't value loyalty like they used to (have they ever?). "Right, that's right."
Suddenly, that sorta-magical time with the wife was interrupted by the Teams window highlighting that Stuart... sent you something. Right at this moment. "Joey, you strike me as the kind of guy who doesn't like staying at home, right?" You read out loud.
"Jeez, his reading of you is so off." Marisa furrowed her eyes in frustration. "Your beliefs and ideals are all over your face. That's why I love you, Joey." She giggled.
"Heh," you booped her small nose. "Same for you." You liked her just for how easily she dispelled murky moments like these.
"Hey!" She quickly held your hand, "Don't do that!" and then just laughed heartily, which made you laugh as well.
And then Stuart sent another message, interrupting the fun mood again, right on its tracks. "We'll arrange a quick zoom soon. I hope you'll be on my side for that one."
"You know, honey." She pulled her hair back, "I think your time's up in this company. I'm not saying you must lea-"
"Marisa, sweetie, you don't have to explain what you meant." He smiled. "I'm already thinking of the resignation letter. I don't like how he's going about this."
"Glad we're on the same wavelength, then." She smiled as well. "But why don't we wait until that meeting happens? I'm curious what's up."
You turn back to the screen, thinking about it for a hard moment. "Well, sure thing, I guess."
So you wait until the meeting comes, and... it's turned into a conspiracy already? A few pranksters, probably two, are trying to turn discourse on Stuart through underhanded means? You just wanted to work and be respected, not to get tangled up in Stuart's temper tantrum and the childish games being played as a result.
"Honey." Marisa looked at you with a smile sly. One that you knew all too well.
"Oh I know that look, don't tell me you mean it." You turned away from her.
"Yes, I do." She spoke in a semi-seductive, semi-devious manner.
"Fine, let's play his game." You turn to her, expecting...
...her reaction, of course, was an excited, child-like "Yaaaay!"

You were so bored out of your mind, and it didn't help it was a slow day. Naturally, when you were bored, your mind went back to your time in Japan, which you despised with an unnatural passion. The hierarchy-based society that insisted on their -sans and -chans and -kuns (and how dare you omit the -sama of someone), all the stupid mindless anime and especially those godawful hentai (or was it ecchi? you forgot the exact word) visual novels with their sex crimes if not unspeakable horrors that would keep even H.P. Lovecraft up at night. Oh and speaking of crimes, the war crimes from being a former Axis power. That didn't mean Allied America wasn't any better in that department, and let's not get started about those fucking nukes they dropped, but, you know, history is written by the victors, and the country is obnoxiously self-conscious about its image to other nations, etc etc etc- To escape that vicious cycle of idle thoughts, you decided to... look up the amendments to the American constitution instead. Which was funny, Most Americans only know two, almost always the first and second. Fewer know what the phrase "plead the fifth" means (at least that's what you thought, you didn't really know what it meant for a while either). And you bet that so few people know that the 18th is useless because the 21st repealed it, and all of the juicy history behind those two amendments. Really, you were trying so, so hard to become an American of spirit and mind, even if your pale, white body forever remains Japanese. Sometimes you wondered if that was all in vain. You're in the United States for a couple years now, and gaining the nationality is guaranteed at this point. You've become more American than most Americans will ever be! And just when you're wondering if maybe, just maybe, you're exaggerating how awful Japan is, or that maybe you're not actually that lacking in Americanism, here comes Stuart with a notification. "We're going back to work from home, Natsuko. I hope you agree with me on that matter, yes?" He may claim to be a proud American, apparently also a Republican who never ever voted Democrat because they're "Unamerican" or some stuff that kind of concerned you as someone who will remain forever a "foreigner" here or a "gaijin" over there, but his character was familiar to you, already. "I hope you agree with me in the next zoom meeting, or else I will" "OR ELSE?? What the fuck!?" You shouted at the top of your voice. You thought he would belong in Japan as a haughty -san, but no, he's a haughty -san who thinks himself deserving of the fake respect and position a -sama is bestowed. He might even think himself the Emperor. Really, fuck this kind of guy. Frustrated, you look around the screen, hoping to find anyone you could rant to about this godawful Stuart character. But then you realized you were looking around the Teams window. "Fuck that noise." You clicked the minimize button, revealing your Telegram window, already open to Amanda. She's quickly become one of your best pals in this country. Someone who liked you for who you are, even if you feel stuck on the boundary between being American and Japanese. Even if you hate yourself. You quickfired her a couple of messages. "amanda" "you gotta check this shit out" "that fuckhead stuart" "just dm'd me on teams" "telling me that we're going back to" "work from office" "or else" It didn't take her long to send back "Say what?". And then "He just told me the same stuff." This enraged you even further. It honestly felt like he wanted everyone to be his yesmen... so he singled them all out with a threatening message first? That shit is just next level psychological manipulation. "fuck him" It didn't feel like you sated the bottomless pit of fire that was your anger, so you looked at someone else to curse. It didn't take you too long to find one, though. "fuck his mother too while im at it" Amanda replied. "Nats pls". Fortunately, you were the kind of person who didn't want to inflict harm on anyone, but unfortunately you weren't the kind of person to conceal what kinda harms you wish were inflicted on the people who pissed you off. You knew full well Amanda doesn't like that. What kind of thought is that? So what if she doesn't like it? He just threatened you with a big fat "or else." That's no laughing matter. "amanda, no one threatens me like that. just say you'll fire me, don't go or else on me" You typed back. "That's... Isn't that also a threat?" Okay, you're still in the heat of the moment, so she's right, but at the same time... you couldn't explain your rationale well. Really. "at least I know what's in it for me, look, im so tired of him, but bleh. let's see how the ship sails, but can we agree on something?" You honestly weren't expecting Amanda to do anything. You wouldn't blame her if she just... went with the flow, as the saying goes. "Nats, you know I'm always game." Amanda's message genuinely surprised you enough to stop speedtyping for only a second, only for the shock to wear out quick. But still, that second felt like forever. And then, you hastily thought of a way to get back at him...and immediately thought to tell her about it. "oh, ok. you know how easy it is to just get into his device, right?" "Heh, yeah, what's with that super easy AnyDesk password" Yep, you guys were on the same radio frequency. "fucking anydesk, hell yeah." You popped up the sticker picker in Telegram, clicked the Princess Bubblegum animated sticker pack, and just stuck the titular character laughing it off. "he basically threatened the whole team so why don't we threaten him ourselves" "You're fucking crazy." Huh. Was Amanda backing off? So what if she backed off? She knows you're fucking crazy already, Stuart or not. This is not new information! "yeah i'm loco, boohoo. you're in, right? you said your babysitting job makes more money than this" Your heart sank before the next answer could roll in. You weren't expecting her to ever sign up to your crazy idea. That's career suicide, basically. You were willing to do it, readily at that. It scared you how readily willing you were for that prospect, like a samurai about to commit fucking seppuku, not even to save his honor, but just because he can do it. How Japanese of you. "Definitely. I guess you're sorted out too?" Well, at that point, it was set. "ill just find another job, lots of cool jobs in america, fuck yeah" At least you had confidence you would survive the career equivalent of driving a sword into your belly. From there, the plan snowballed into something you never expected to do, but... you were thrilled about it. Oh, and besides, you can look up all interactions with Stuart with how neglectful he is of his device's security. Kinda useful skill, isn't it? "Don't use your birthday as a password," you thought. Still though, you had to be careful with it. If Stuart wasn't around, the janitors were still on the prowl... —— Hi, Joppo. You are NATSUKO HANZOU, a MAFIA ROLECOP. Another slow day at work. Usually this was a source of boredom (and sometimes additional stress), but it was just fine right now. You took the time to rummage through your closet to figure out what kind of clothes you should wear for tonight's "night party", and there wasn't a set that struck a good balance between being revealing and not being revealing, or rather, a good balance of sexy and pretty. Thankfully the makeup was in the bag (figuratively, not literally), as well as how to do your hair for tonight.
This hesitation on what to choose made you start thinking. How funny it all turned out. From living a strict, stuffy life as a devout Coptic in religiously hypocritical Egypt, to just merely pretending you're a Christian in the more liberal United States to publicly hide what's essentially the real you: a promiscuous party girl.
And all it took to end your life of acting as someone who wasn't and will never be you, was just a little bit of freedom. Oh, how freedom reveals the truth!
It didn't help that your home country itself was awful, especially the men. Either religious nutjobs who chide you for exposing your hair (and conveniently ignore the cross you still wear), or fools who pray for safety from Satan after seeing you, or morons who harass you just because you were born a girl in the wrong country. You even read several translations of the Bible and even the Qu'ran too for good measure, just to lecture the religious nutjobs yourself - who almost always never read their own books. Well, he's not a religious nutjob in the sense, but Stuart, your manager, is a Bible thumper whose copy of the holy book is gathering dust. He rarely showed that side, but it worked to get your way with him sometimes.
And of course, a Teams notification pops up. "Hi Miriam." He just sent. For a second, you were reminded that your parents named you after Virgin Mary... well, the Arabic rendition of her name (which is also the name for Aaron's and Moses's sister, why is all of this stuff so confusing!?). It was funny, considering who you really are, and who was the character they wanted you to play. But aside from that, what the fuck is Stuart scheming this time?
"We're going back to work from the office soon. I hope you agree with me, yes? It's not good for a lady like you to stay holed up in your house forever."
"Go fuck yourself, Stuart." You said out loud. Of course, he didn't hear that.
Back at home, everyone would say you're supposed to marry and be a loving wife to your husband, of course. In other words, stay in the kitchen. And now with Stuart, he's basically telling you to leave the kitchen because "it's not good for a lady". What's with men thinking they have the power to put you wherever they want like you're some sort of prop? Just because you're born a woman?
Like, yeah, okay, you're in America now, the land of the free, it's not the open air prison you spent your whole life in, and you can quit this job and work for another. But you've already done that twice before, and because of power-tripping men like him.
...and when the Zoom meeting started, you decided to stay on the side of safety, for now, by not joining the renegades, whoever they are. You sympathized with their honestly kind of pointless battle as a renegade yourself, but publicly, you're still a Christian who cherishes her cross.
That said, you know your coworkers' addresses. You could seduce them, and somehow stop them from doing any kind of work, and maybe deduce if they're the renegades or not. And you've got the tools for it, too, like your perfumes, sweet voice, irresistible body, and a pair of handcuffs. As for people like Joey, who loves his wife so much he would never betray her for you... you respected his character greatly, and you always wished you were like him, but that didn't stop you from socially engineering him to accidentally give up his Citrix credentials to you.
"Why am I such a piece of shit? God, what has Joey ever done to me? He's an angel on Earth, damnit." You asked yourself on the spot, in a moment of guilty conscience. Maybe the safety from Satan prayers weren't misguided, huh? You're a pair of wings and a tail short from being a succubus, anyway.

You win when all threats to Town have been eliminated.

Your TikTok feed is full of people doing all sorts of silly things and challenges. You've almost tried a few of these challenges but ended up chickening out not even a few seconds after starting it. Like the ice bucket challenge, how long ago was that? Hell, you almost tried out the tide pod one. There were also plenty, plenty of pet videos, which reminded you of your cat from a while ago... which ran away, you didn't know why.
When you heard a Teams call come in, that's when you accidentally tossed the phone in a panic. You also realized the phone screen was already cracked, and with its sharp landing on the floor, the phone had a snowball's chance in hell if it still worked. But hey, at least you answered the Teams call immediately. Of course, it was from Stuart, the only one who called you on Teams.
"Hi Sam." You heard Stuart's old voice.
"Uh, hi Stuart." You answered, and as usual, you sound really sleepy even though that's how you usually talk. "Is there something?"
"Yes Sam, I'm going to stop this work from home thing very soon. Are you on board?" He sounded calm and collected, as if this was in the works for a while.
You, on the other hand, didn't even think twice about any of this. "Yes, sure."
"That's great. OK, that's all. Bye Sam."
"Bye Stuart." And thus, Stuart hanged up.
You had the tingling feeling, just a little tingling feeling. Did Stuart take advantage of the fact you preferred not to think? Like, you didn't even stop right there to think if this was in your best interest or not. Sometimes, you think you're supposed to think through stuff like this. You're not a river, to be dammed or rerouted by anyone, without your consent. You're a human, a being capable of thinking...
But, right. You know what happens to people who do think? Just ask Natsuko. She thinks too much about two different pieces of land. That's why she's so troubled. She, and others like her who think, end up being very miserable.
Why should you think?
Of course, later, you find yourself dragged into a Zoom meeting, which turns into... a game of thinking who those "Sailor Moon" and "Madoka Kaname" users are supposed to represent. Ugh, thinking. "WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THAT!?" You shouted.

As was your routine for every day, you greeted everyone with a "Hi" and a quick checkup message about two hours into work. You weren't sure if some of them were reciprocating your warmth, but eh. Better be the shining example of friendliness even when no one else is. At the very least, you get to have good relations with everyone, even those who normally have too much of a business-centric mindset. And it usually does work.
Except with Stuart.
The old man hasn't even recognized any of your efforts to warm up to him, even after all the frankly terrible things he did with you as a manager. But it's okay. You learned to just put up with it, for good things come to those who wait. Especially if you work very hard and put your all into work, even on slow days like this where there's obviously nothing (useful) to be done, but you're cracking on anyway.
Why is any of this relevant right now? Well, let's go back to Stuart. He sent you a message on Teams, obviously. That message immediately proves how wrong you are about him. The friendliness strategy does work with most people... but he's the first of his kind.
"I'm going to revoke everyone's ability to work from home. It's time to get back to the office. We'll have a zoom meeting about this soon." That was Stuart's first message to you, right after your daily "Hi."
Your other coworkers would reply with at least a "Hello", and then a conversation could be struck up, and you get to know each other better. How ridiculous is it, then, that you can have a respectful, no, civil, NAY, FRIENDLY convo with Natsuko of all people despite her quickfuse temper, but you can't even get Stuart to just respect you enough for greeting him?
Of course, later on during the Zoom meeting, you find out there's a conspiracy brewing. You decide to play it safe and stay on the side of the majority, but deep down... you're thinking of quitting. Just not now. You've already made good friends here...maybe these friendships would help?

The office usually isn't that empty. There's still a few of the essential employees here and there, but they're mostly sales people (the kinds who are hired just to look good) and those engineers who keep the servers from exploding. That was great, because that meant you had a job. Granted, cleaning up other people's trash isn't most people's idea of a career, but for you, it kept the lights on, put food on the table... and the pay's kinda generous, so you have a cool studio apartment, stocked with the kind of stuff you like: books and videogames. Still, you didn't understand why Stuart seemed visibly agitated this time around, storming out of the office like something had happened. Well, you hide your technical expertise from everyone just for moments like this... it didn't need much fiddling around to figure out that Stuart wanted everyone to get back to the office, and then... a bunch of users named after anime girls soured his mood. How curious. Well, Stuart's the kind of old man who regressed back to being a petulant child, you thought. But still, this is kind of... interesting. You had no idea who most of these people are (except Natsuko for how aggressively anti-Japan she is), but you've already sussed out that there's lots of links between them. But what kinda links? "Why does any of this concern me to begin with?" You sigh under your breath. You didn't even need to know what was about to unfold. But just like the protagonist of your favorite book, Alice in Wonderland, curiosity drove you down into the rabbit hole. —— Hi, Sage. You are TERRESSA KELLER, a JANITOR (observer). "Hmmm, Karen." Natsuko looked at the American lady (or rather, the part of the screen where she was) with a little bit of indifference, or rather, she didn't seem too fixated on her. "Well, I find your accusation of Manny weird. You just went outta the blue and accused him of being those scummy magical girls just because he crashed a plane in his airplane simulator. So what? I might as well call you Madoka because you look like her mom or some other silly bullshit, no offense." Franco suddenly got up from his seat. "Why would you talk about Christmas now, Joe? We're still 12 days away from it. Suspicious." "Nikolay, why are you thinking?" Sam pointed at the camera. Incidentally, that meant he pointed at everyone in the stream, Stuart included, but...the message was delivered at all. Nikolay turned left and right in confusion. "Wait, I'm suspicious just because I'm thinking? Okay I'm suspicious." Joey sighed. "That's kind of suspicio..." then he trailed off for a few moments. "Okay, just fohgettabout it." "Yes, of course yes we should talk about Christmas now! We're in December already, jeez, Franco!" Johan retorted. "Joe, no." Karen quickly waved at the screen. "I was wrong about Manny. But is it really Franco? I heard someone say he's suspicious, right off the gate." "Huh." Joe paused. "Well, you're right... Nikolay, was it? Just saying you're suspicious...that doesn't feel good." And so on, and so forth... so far, it's heating up, but it's not to the maximum extent possible, yet. And for some reason, Miriam has decided to stay quiet. "HAH!" Nikolay snorted. "I caught you in my trap Johan! There's no way you can get outta it!" That works out better for scum though, as they've taken out the recipient of Catventurer's friendly neighbor claim, Trent.
By next weekend's nightkill there should be no power roles left (that have a point) because Cat has already been rolecopped by joppo.

Speaking of dogfights, you didn't actually need this job or anything for a sustainable life. You just did it because your little sister insisted that you work a job - you're already well off enough. Still, you're gonna miss randomly inviting coworkers to watching your stream, like Joey who just liked seeing stunt planes fly, or Natsuko who was mesmerized by the many simulations of the Battle of Midway regardless of which side you played. Heck, you even got Miriam's attention at one point with the particulars of flying a boring, regular Boeing 777. Only that butthead Stuart wouldn't want to see any of that cool stuff. The bit with Natsuko screeching at Nikolay at the end of the Friday W2 votecount was a last second addition but I like how when she thought of a holiday that's far from Christmas, it's 4th of July. Really shows how desperate she is to become an American in mind and soul, by any means necessary.
But if I had to delve into how American she is, she maybe doesn't think the Second Amendment is a good idea, or guns in general. Despite how rude and foul she is, she's the kind of person who wishes harm on her enemies but will never hurt them directly. So she probably doesn't want to keep a gun. Maybe she'd put an AR-15 prop as decor instead of owning the real thing.

I'm glad and kind of surprised that my characters went from "put dots on the political compass and base their personality around that" to becoming full fledged characters that don't need said political compass to begin with, with their own character arcs... well some of them, I can't say all of them sadly. I was too focused on Natsuko in general, she's really fun to write.
Nats x Amanda was something I just thought up at before I first wrote their confessions in the scumchat, and at this point I figured it was only going to be a natural character development. From the get go and they were already best friends, and I did have vibes of them getting together and becoming an official couple, but didn't follow up on it until I actually did so late in the game.
Better yet, the after-game party is just an extension of my obsession with no-death games. In my previous no-death games, the characters got a pretty light ending with some losers and some winners. Here, everyone is technically a loser with no winners because of Stuart being the dick that he is. But more than that, I wanted team town (the losing team) to have a fun time, organized by none other than Natsuko herself (the winning team along with Amanda). That's the fun part of forum mafia games where you knock out players and don't kill them, you get to write fun events like these and turn them into literal short novels. Of course, that assumes we have the one party that everyone hates, Stuart, but so far it seems to look great from my side.

I know most of you don't read the flavor and are just here to play the game and don't care about Stuart or Natsuko or whatever (and you're probably the kind of person Sam embodies), but I can say it was really fun to write all that flavor.

Catventurer sends friendly message to scene
You decided to grace Nikolay with a note of friendliness and understanding, on WhatsApp no less after you managed to find his number, hoping that he's not one of the "enemies"...actually even if he were an "enemy", that's fine. You didn't like Stuart much either. He felt more like a despot king than a boss who should be compassionate to the people under him.
Not like it mattered, though.

catventurer resignation PM You couldn't care enough to stay in the game anymore, but you're not the type to leave behind your new friends and entire workplace just like that. You'd rather keep tabs on what everyone was up to. Even Miriam, odd as she was. In all honesty, you wished Stuart would get what's coming for him, more than anything. You just wanted him to suffer, and be there to see it. Maybe even talk about it for weeks with who are now your ex-coworkers. You have resigned! Maybe you wouldn't find an egotistical asshole like Stuart in the next job. You can always observe the game from this thread: whyquicktopicwhy.proboards.com/thread/33/janitors-worry-mafia-observer-thread
